The Fourth of July is upon us, and that means an all-day cookout will soon begin among families and friends across the country. Preparing for a cookout is no easy feat, with decorations to gather including rustic tablecloths, plates, cutlery, napkins and maybe even firework sprinklers. We go through all this trouble to ensure that the food looks decent on the table, but since the food is exposed to the sun and heated all day, it is important to take proper food safety measures to prevent the food from spoiling. Janell Goodwin, a food safety specialist with the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, provides insight on how to keep your food fresh and edible this holiday season.
4th Of July Bbq Ideas
When grilling in a park or backyard, you may not be equipped with the same kitchen tools and cleaning supplies as you would be in the comfort of your own home kitchen. For that reason, Goodwin offered some advice on how to prevent three food safety incidents as best you can with minimal resources.
Th Of July Party Ideas For Backyard Picnic
1. Maintain a clean environment. Make sure there are enough clean utensils and plates. It will be difficult to keep everything clean - including your hands - while grilling outside because you won't always have access to running water. Find out if there is a source of clean water near where you will be. If not, bring water for preparation and cleaning or pack clean clothes and wet towels for cleaning surfaces and hands.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
2. Be aware of cross contamination. It's harder to keep raw and cooked food separate when you're confined to smaller spaces. Harmful bacteria are present in raw meat and poultry, and their juices can contaminate cooked food. To prevent foodborne illness, do not use the same plate, cutting board or utensils for raw and cooked food. Bring several sets of these items to avoid this and label them to make sure which is which.
3. Bring a food thermometer. Be sure to cook food at the lowest internal safe temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Grilled meat and poultry tend to brown quickly on the outside, so use a food thermometer to make sure the food has reached a safe minimum internal temperature. Never partially grill meat or poultry and finish grilling later.
Fourth Of July Bbq Menu
Meredith Carothers, Technical Information Specialist at the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, gave us a rundown of what the internal temperature should be for different types of meat, as well as cuts of meat. For example, steaks, roasts, or chops made from red meat like beef, pork, lamb, and veal should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F, while ground meat should be cooked to 160°F to destroy all traces. harmful bacteria. On the other hand, chicken, regardless of the method of preparation, should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.
Food that has been in the sun and heat for a long time is more susceptible to the growth of bacteria, especially the types that cause foodborne illness.
"If the temperature outside is 90°F or higher, perishable food should not be left out for more than an hour," Goodwin said. Yes, this means that the food you bring to an hour-long event needs to be eaten very quickly so it doesn't spoil.
Fourth Of July Side Dishes
Perishable foods generally include items that need to be refrigerated, such as raw and cooked meats, as well as prepared potato and pasta salads (and you know how much potato salad, coleslaw, hamburgers, and hot dogs are for the 4th of July). This does not apply to alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer or foods such as crackers, cookies, bread, spices and whole fruits and vegetables.
Goodwin gives you insight on how to properly store food on your grill so it's not prone to bacteria growth and possible foodborne illness among your guests.
1. Keep hot food at 140°F or higher. Place cooked food in steamers, preheated steam tables, warming trays or slow cookers.

2. Keep food cold at 40°F or below. Place foods that need to be kept cold, such as pasta salads and coleslaw, in fountains or containers filled with ice with a layer of ice underneath. Remember to refill the ice as it melts to keep it cold.
3. Prepare the right amount of food so you don't overdo it. If you have prepared a lot of food, divide it into thin containers and cool it quickly.
4. Try making burgers on demand this Independence Day instead of cooking a whole batch first and then taking them out. However, having a baking dish or warmer handy will greatly reduce the risk of bacterial growth.
